Volvo XC60 Overview
The Volvo XC60 has been around since 2008 and was updated for the 2014 model year. Nine years after its introduction to the market, Volvo decided it was time to usher in a new generation, and usher one in they did. The new-gen model comes complete with a new design inside and out, new safety systems that include steer assist and oncoming lane mitigation, and a new “CleanZone” climate control system that is said to remove harmful pollutants from the air outside of the cabin when the ventilation system is functioning. Volvo will offer the new XC60 with its T8 hybrid powertrain, the D4 and D5 diesel powertrains, and the T5 and T6 gasoline powertrains for a power range that stretches between 190 horsepower and as much as 407 horsepower. In the right configuration, this SUV can hit 62 mph in 5.3 seconds.
“The XC60 is an SUV not designed to look down on others but to drive. The exterior has an athletic sculpture with a subtle, timeless quality. The interior is a masterful composition of well-resolved architecture, beautiful materials, and the very latest technology – all perfectly blended together. The XC60 provides a true Scandinavian experience which will make our customers feel special,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President, Design at Volvo Car Group. So, it all sounds pretty good, right? Well, let’s take a closer look at the new XC60 to see if it really lives up to all that hype.
Volvo XC60 Design
It was a smart call by Volvo to adopt the top-down approach for its model strategy. After the XC90 and XC60, the new, smaller model completes its SUV portfolio, says the company. The XC60 is built on the new ‘Compact Modular Architecture’ (CMA) platform created by Volvo and Geely.
This is a versatile platform capable of spawning different vehicle types of varying sizes in the B and C segments. Unlike many of the competing models which are crossovers, the XC60 has the same upright, tall SUV stance that its bigger siblings also sport. The XC60 sports the Thor-hammer LED signature in the headlamps with some minor modifications, and the same bonnet grille design with the vertical slats and the Volvo logo with the sash cutting across. The grille is finished in black and the other features are also proportionately smaller.
The bonnet itself has a clamshell design, but the slab tapers down at the front creating a curious, but still very appealing nose. The XC60 is obviously taller than most of the competitors, with a ground clearance of 211 mm. Also impressive is its 21.7-degree approach angle and the 30.4-degree departure angle — both these dimensions deliver that message that this has the capability to go off-road; even before you know that the XC60 comes standard with a fourth-generation Haldex All-wheel Drive (AWD) system for those jaunts.
The black side cladding running around the vehicle and cutting the rear fender in half makes the XC60 seem even taller. Its SUV character comes through most when viewed from the side, with the contrast glossy black roof running parallel to the shoulder line. The black treatment extends to the roof rails, rear spoiler, A and B pillars and halfway down the C-pillar too. The 18-inch rims in my test mule didn’t look too weak, but it was exciting to know that customers can even opt for 20-inch alloys.
The rear is one of the most uncomplicated and elegant designs, with a tasteful version of the vertical tail-lamp design that Volvos are famous for. The powered tailgate cuts deep into the rear fender and also offers a low loading lip when it is being opened.
Volvo XC60 Cabin
Launched as a Tech-Pack, the interior of the one and only variant welcomes you with a slew of tech, great ambience with high comfort levels. Giving the complement to its exterior, the interior of the Volvo XC60 comes with a beautifully crafted cabin, premium leather and the tailored dash with contrasting stitching and driftwood inlays allow the magnificence of the materials to speak for themselves. While, the highlights of the Volvo XC60 is the gear level knob, made of Orrefors crystal glass and a diamond shaped start/stop button. Check for Volvo XC60 in kmindia
The controls for the suspension has been designed in a laudable rolling dial. The advanced infotainment system gives a complete futuristic touch with the 9-inch touchscreen functionality, enabling smartphone like features such as swiping, pinching, and enlarging. The previous model used to come with the clutter of buttons which has been replaced with a few tactile filled buttons. Both the rows gives a sense of comfort with its spacious and roomy cabin that gives ample leg space for the passengers.
Another major attraction of the Volvo XC60 interior is the panoramic sunroof. The height-adjustment feature for both driver and passenger seat is an important feature available in this Tech Pack. Some additional features that you will find are parking assist and hill descent controls. This variant has additional facilities such as the 15-speaker Bowers and Wilkins audio system. The ventilated front seats and the Nappa leather upholstery give a majestic look to the Volvo XC60. The attractive Volvo XC60 interiors would surely give a good competition to its closest rival, the Q5.
Volvo XC60 Performance
Globally, the XC40 is being offered with three-cylinder and four-cylinder hybrid powertrains including dual clutch transmissions. For the India-spec, Volvo is planning to offer the SUV only with a two-litre, four-cylinder, diesel (D4) engine paired with an eight-speed geartronic auto transmission. Initially, the XC60 will also be offered only in one ‘R Design’ trim variant. The D4 engine generates a peak power of 190 hp and a peak torque of 400 Nm. With an excellent NVH package, engine noise is hardly heard inside the cabin even under steady throttle. The refined engine also doesn’t feel strained at any point while powering this 1.7-tonne SUV (kerb weight). During my test drive on the highways and rural roads on the outskirts of Hyderabad, the engine also delivered an acceptable mileage of 9-10 kmpl.
There is loads of low-end torque available from just under 2,000 rpm; so acceleration from standstill feels quick. Compared to Eco and Comfort, the XC60 feels quicker in Dynamic mode, with gear shifts being delayed all the way to the redline. Manual gear selection is also possible using steering-mounted paddles. The Haldex AWD system keeps the torque split at a 95:5 bias for mostly front-wheel drive conditions on regular Tarmac, and can offer up to a 55:45 split for off-road conditions.
Volvo XC60 Rideing
As far as the Volvo XC60 handling is concerned, the new PowerPulse engine is a very powerful unit with minimum lag and quick responding gearbox. The new 4-cylinder engine is a clean burning fuel and it is efficienct as well. It holds it lines very well through fast corners and Volvo’s massive safety systems means you are absolutely safe while doing so. Thinking of the rough road ride, the Violvo XC60 can glide through big patches easily with its air suspension system.
Volvo XC60 Safety
So, as you would expect, the new XC60 gets Volvo’s City Safety suite of driver assistance features, but this time around, Volvo has upped the ante a bit. Now, in addition to the auto brake function at speeds of 30 mph and lower, the new XC60 will also get oncoming lane mitigation and steer assist, the latter of which is used to correct your trajectory path if you cross into oncoming traffic and don’t react when a collision is imminent. And, Volvo’s blind spot system uses the same function to help pull you back into your lane if you don’t notice that there’s a car in your blind spot. One option safety feature is Volvo’s Pilot Assist which is basically a semi-autonomous assistance system that will take car of steering, acceleration, and braking on well-marked roads as long as you’re going 80 mph or less – think of this as something similar to active cruise control or early iterations of Tesla AutoPilot system.
Volvo Xc60 On-Road Price in Hyderabad ranges from 60,15,510 to 60,15,510 for variants XC60 Inscription and XC60 Inscription respectively. Volvo Xc60 is available in 1 variants and 4 colours. Below are details of Volvo Xc60 variants price in Hyderabad. Check for XC60 price in Hyderabad at Carzprice.
Volvo XC60 Verdict
“We have focused on building a car that can deliver pleasure to all of your senses – from a commanding view of the road ahead in a beautifully appointed and calm cabin, to a safe, inspired and confident ride,” said Henrik Green, Senior Vice President Product & Quality at Volvo Car Group. “We’ve paid particular attention to making life easier for our customers by providing them with the creature comforts and services that take the hassle out of everyday life.”
Based on my initial review, I would have to say that Mr. Green has hit the nail right on the head – especially when you compared the first-gen model to the second-gen model. The infotainment display is easier to reach and use, the seats are more comfortable and supportive, the interior and exterior are both aesthetically pleasing, and all of the available drivetrains in each market should be available with Volvo’s AWD system. Volvo has made huge strides in recent years to really improve overall quality, and the new XC60 is a clear example of this. Of course, we’re still waiting to get our hands on one to put it through the paces, but something tells be it won’t disappoint. But, until that happens, tell us what you think about it in the comments section below.
