Mercedes Benz GLS Class Exteriors

The Mercedes-Benz GLS is a full sized super-luxury SUV that follows the same design silhouette like the rest of the German car maker’s models. Earlier, the ML-Class was replaced with the GLE nomenclature and now thw GL has been replaced with the GLS. But, this is not just a badge change but a lot of other improvements and adaptive-ness to suit Indian road conditions. The most obvious change is at the front with the GLS getting a new face. The highlight is the full-LED, adaptive headlights that look like the ones on the S-Class. Other changes include a more rounded, muscular twin-slat grille; as also a redesigned bumper and hood that add more oomph to the SUV’s personality. Changes at the rear are limited to a revised bumper and full-LED tail lights which look similar to the older GL from a distance.

The GLS looks a lot more appealing. It’s a design that will make you soak in the details – though it is more muscular and well-balanced, exactly the way a big and brawny SUV. . At over five metres, the GLS is one of the biggest SUVs in the country, and is longer and wider than a lot of other full-sized luxury ones. The large exterior dimensions translate to acres of space inside, and the GLS is one of the largest SUVs, with genuine space for seven adults.

Mercedes Benz GLS Class Interiors

The large exterior dimensions translate to acres of space inside, and the GLS is one of the largest SUVs, with genuine space for seven adults. The third row offers enough space to seat two people, though getting in is a bit of a task as the second row seats do not slide forward and can only be tumbled. However, the second row is the place to be with its kind of legroom, headroom, kneeroom and, of course, comfort. The rich feel from the plush leather seats adds to the luxurious experience of being wrapped in the back seat. The best seat for the target audience.

Front seats also offer great comfort, allowing you to sink into its the comfort offering excellent under-thigh support. The commanding stance of the SUV also adds to the character of sitting in the front seat. The design of the dashboard is rather dated and has the typical Mercedes-Benz layout but there is nothing to complain about. Top-notch quality is witneessed right from the fit and finsh and the feel of the buttons.

Steering wheel and revised instrument cluster is the first thing you will notice. Display for the latest generation COMAND system is an 8-inch unit that sits on top of the dashboard. The COMAND system comes with Apple CarPlay that is a boon for iPhone users. The ambience inside is courtesy to the mood lighting and one can choose from three colours and five variable adjustments. Features like a large panoramic sunroof, temprature controlled cup holders and electric fold for the third row seats are also on offer. The infotainment screen also doubles up as display for the 360-degree camera which makes parking or maneuvering this massive SUV in tight spots extremely easy.

Mercedes Benz GLS Class Engine

The Mercedes GLS is offered in only one guise – the GLS350d. It is the same 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine that was offered on the previous version too. The oil-burner pumps out 258 HP of power and 620 Nm of torque but what has changed is the fact that the engine is now coupled to a new 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission instead of the earlier 7-speed unit. The brute touches 100 km/hr from standstill in 8.3 seconds which is quick enough for an SUV of this size. To know more info on Mercedes Benz GLS Class check Kmindia

The engine has good enough grunt for regular driving but the oil-burner itself sounds a bit coarse and feels rough at higher RPMs. Torque delivery at lower RPMs is good while the mid range also has a pretty good power band. The GLS never feels out of steam and even if you want to push the vehicle, the SUV won’t disappoint at all. You get the usual driving modes like Eco, Comfort, Individual and Sport. In Sport mode, the SUV moves with much more urgency and even the steering and suspension feel tightened up.

Talking about the new gearbox, it certainly is very smooth and decently quick in shifting cogs. Gear shifts happen a notch above the 1500 RPM mark under normal driving conditions. In city conditions, sometimes the transmission feels confused while choosing the correct cog. It even makes the GLS a very good cruiser with 100 km/hr coming up at 1400 RPM in top gear. We managed to extract a fuel efficiency figure of 8-9 km/l under mixed driving conditions.

Mercedes Benz GLS Class Driving

The DYNAMIC Select lets you choose vehicle settings depending on the terrain you are driving on namely Individual, Sport, Comfort, Slippery and Off-road with each mode having its own characteristics with regards to steering inputs, suspension and engine responses. Ride quality on the GLS is impeccable and the mammoth SUV can soak in pot holes with utter ease. That said, there is a considerable feel of large speed breakers. The GLS comes with a plethora of safety features such as Adaptive High Beam Assist Plus, Crosswind Assist, Attention Assist, PRE-Safe, 8 airbags, Downhill Speed Regulation, 360-degree camera parking package, etc. Talking about after-sales service, we’ve said it a number of times that Mercedes excellent service among premium automakers and their service network is also widely spread across the country.

Mercedes Benz GLS Class Verdict

The Mercedes GLS is certainly the biggest SUV in its segment and offers oodles of space along with a good engine and gearbox combo and plenty of features to play with. However, something seems to be missing as the GLS certainly doesn’t feel like the S-Class of SUVs. Mercedes has crafted the vehicle nicely but it seems to be missing a ‘wow’ factor that doesn’t make you feel as special as it should, especially when compared to newer rivals like the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90. If your priorities are space, comfort and road presence, the Mercedes GLS is a certainly a good choice in the full size luxury SUV segment.

Mercedes Benz GLA Class Overview & Performance

Mercedes Benz GLA Class Overview

Mercedes has recently taken the covers off the facelift GLA Class which will be sold as the 2018 model. The car was recently unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The GLA was launched for the first time back in 2013 and it impressed everyone with its handling and refinement characteristics. Some of the main highlights of Mercedes first compact SUV included dynamic design, light footed handling and offcourse the premium interior. This new SUV also helped Mercedes become the broadest SUV range over all the other premium European car manufacturers. Mercedes Benz GLA Class Design

Yes, the GLA is an SUV but that does not mean you start vacating your parking space or think of getting more area to keep this one as it is very compact in dimensions. Unlike traditional SUVs, this one chooses to look more crisp than brawny. It might remind you of the A-Class but see it in real and the bigger car gets elevated. A pronounced radiator grille with twin slats and a handsome Mercedes Benz logo is the new face of all portfolio cars. It gives a familiar look to all models without making them look like twins. On the hood of the GLA are parallel running power bulges. There is a large air intake on the front bumper which has been treated in a glossy aluminium finish. The air pockets on both corners of the bumper look smart too. Adding to the front face are the newly designed Bi-Xenon headlights with LED day time lights. The LED curve which is now seen on all cars including the newly revealed AMG GT looks extremely stylish.

The side profile gets flared wheel arches. These arches and the lower running board area have plastic cladding making it look tough. We liked the 18inch alloys which Mercedes offers as standard equipment. While we say it is part of the standard list, these models cannot be termed as ‘reasonably’ priced because of the complicated designs and list of additions it gets over the A-Class.It shares its wheelbase with the premium hatch and that’s the only similarity in dimensions as the GLA is a longer vehicle. Visually, it looks bigger. This one has a ground clearance of 183mm meaning it is more capable to take soft roads in addition to tight manoeuvring on normal tarmac. The same can be vindicated with the fact of 235/50 R18 tyres being offered as standard.

What we loved about the styling are the design lines flowing in tandem. It is a SUV, which has been styled like a coupe especially the rhythmically flowing window section along with the character lines on the side profile. The C-Pillar flows smoothly on the waist line carrying the dynamic stance to the wide tail gate. Many would agree that the rear profile of the GLA  Class leaves a better impact than the front and side combined together. It is simply the attention to detailing like the split tail lights which are connected with a chrome lining or the lower exhaust surround which gets a brushed glossy finish with twin sporty exhausts.

Mercedes Benz GLA Class Cabin

Now step inside and this is when you can’t make any difference between the A siblings if you are not a keen observer. Only way to feel the difference is the seat height, which is slightly above the average sedan height but in the world of SUVs, it is still low. What changes in the GLA facelift you ask? Well, nothing major apart from the new three-spoke steering wheel, ambient lighting with 12 colours and a bigger 8-inch infotainment display that now comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The steering now has a 3D effect to it, the horn pad jutting out, looks nice. The screen is bright and clear but it’s not touch, you have to control it via the COMMAND system knobs. Otherwise everything is similar and the dashboard looks quite attractive, specially the slightly updated instrument cluster. I also like the way the aircon vents are styled, practical yet flashy. However, I really can’t digest the fact that a Rs. 40 lakh + Mercedes doesn’t come with auto climate control! It doesn’t even have a reverse parking sensor but thankfully gets a camera.

What you would like in the GLA is the fantastic quality, consistency and the feel of materials. Everything is top notch, the equipment list is quite strong too, push button start, panoramic sunroof, electric seats, driving modes, electric tailgate, etc. The seats also get soft leather which smells nice too. Now the rear seat experience is average if you have the SUV practicality in mind because headroom for tall passengers is limited and because of the huge transmission hump, the middle passenger might find it a squeeze. The tailgate now is electrically operational. The boot is quite big and accommodating but the spare space saver wheel just eats up a lot of space. For more info on GLA Class visit  aryavarta.co.in

Mercedes Benz GLA Class Rideing

Mercedes has upped its game in the dynamics department with the newer lot of cars. Same is the case with the GLA and its ride and handling balance. I really like the way it soaks bumps and takes undulations. You won’t feel out of place on bad Indian roads with this pliant ride quality. Well, ride has been Mercedes’ forte always but they have managed to strike the right balance of handling as well. The nose turns in quickly with your steering inputs and the feedback isn’t numb. It provides consistent feel while cornering and you know where it’s going. Body roll is there but it’s not to the extent that you get annoyed, the roll is controllable. I was a bit disappointed with the brakes of my test car because the previous publication who got hold of it had tested it on the BIC. The brake pads were worn off and the pedal feel was inconsistent.

Mercedes Benz GLA Class Safety

Safety is a big priority for the three-pointed star and the GLA gets high-tech equipment including ABS, ESP, 6 airbags, hill descent control, tyre pressure monitoring system, attention assist, etc. Mercedes is spreading its foothold in the Indian market rapidly and the network is getting quite strong pan India. In this scenario you need not worry about the after sales, which is quite manageable even in non-metro cities. Yes, it is a German luxury car and you should be ready for heavy bills if you damage a crucial part.
