BMW X6 Facelift Review & First Drive

Bmw X6 Test Drive in Chennai

BMW X6 Overview

The BMW X6, which was first launched in 2008, pioneered the now burgeoning coupe-SUV segment. And now, there’s a new one! It gets BMW’s latest design language, technological features and other updates too. Set to go on sale in select international markets by the end of 2019, BMW has confirmed that the new X6 will be available in four variants – xDrive 30d, xDrive 40i, M50d and M50i.

It has also grown in size when compared to the outgoing model. The new X6 is 26mm longer (4935mm) and 15mm wider (2004mm) while the wheelbase has increased by 42mm (2975mm). Its sporty stance is further enhanced by the wider front track and 6mm lower height (1696mm). In terms of exterior design, the new X6 also features the latest iteration of BMW’s signature kidney grille design, now bigger in size and also illuminated for the first time. It also gets the optional BMW Laserlight feature with LED headlights. View offers on BMW X6 in Mumbai at Autozhop.

BMW X6 Exterior & Look

Outlandish is the first world that your brain churns when you see the new BMW X6M. The grand proportions of muscles and contours flowing all over this jacked up coupe inspired vehicle ditch the conventionally boring straights and squares of an orthodox SUV design.

Bold and brash is the front profile with large headlights further accentuating its menacing presence. The larger kidney grille gets a bright surround and also features vertical slats along with a camera nicely slotted under the model label. The long and contoured hood features character lines that drop a hint of the beasty of a motor underneath it. The front bumper looks interestingly complicated with multiple scoops and fog lamps. These air pockets lend a visual appeal for sure as they look capable of swallowing a hatchback but also offer functional value to help cool the motor inside.

While the front face is similar to that of the X5M, the X6M is a tad wider in profile. However, the similarities end at the face itself because when you see the X6M along its length, it looks like no other vehicle with its sloping roofline which flows in an angular way from the front before merging with the shot and butch rear. The shoulder line remains strong as it climbs all the way to the rear.

It being a vehicle of larger dimensions doesn’t look bulky at all. The contrasting combination of a SUVish car with a sedan like window line gives it an amazing silhouette. Also, adding an important touch to the rear half is a strong profile line which highlights the rear wheel arch, breaking the mono flow on the wedge line running along the shoulder. This one too runs on M special 20-inch wheels with Pirelli PZero tyres; they look absolutely smashing especially with the five spoke machined finish on the alloys. The rocker molding on the lower half are placed lower on the M models and blend well with the side skirts.

BMW X6 Interior & Cabin

Climb into these high riding SUVs and you are greeted by familiar looking cabins. Up front, in both these cars, the space is fantastic and there’s enough headroom, legroom and width. The sporty front seats have wide range of adjustments that allows you to find an ideal driving position with ease. The seats are also finished in fine-grain Merino leather with contrast stitching and they also sport an M badge in the back rests. Both these cars have a similar cabin as compared to the standard car. But to help them stand out BMW has added M leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles, Head-Up display, door sill plates with M logo and a bespoke M gearshift lever.

And it’s not just the seats and the upholstery that brag the M badge, but there is also an M- spec instrument cluster that displays loads of information. The centre console boasts of an iDrive screen which is controlled via the round knob located next to the gearshift lever. The cabin is ergonomically friendly with minimal buttons scattering the cabin. Moving to the rear while the X5 has a very comfortable seat with loads of space, the same can’t be said of the X6. Due to the tapering roof-line BMW had to scoop out the cabin roof to allow as much headroom as possible. But there’s no getting away from the fact that anyone of above-average height will probably feel cramped, especially given the X6’s small rear windows. Even the rearward visibility through that small rear windshield is heavily restricted which makes reversing and parking a nightmare.

BMW X6 Engine & Transmission

Can this one do doughnuts on a track?” is what I asked to the trainer, not expecting to see what happened next. Before I narrate my track experience with the new X6M, there is some vital piece of information that you should know. The X6M weighs 2.3-tonnes and is dimensionally larger than many SUVs but at the same time is not a shy character because it makes use of a 4.4-litre TwinTurbo V8 engine.

Yes, our previous review car too features the same motor but the dynamics of X5M and X6M are worlds apart. The former is a well behaved car with a larger heart but the X6M is a totally rebel when it comes to following conventional rules. It just wants an excuse to stop the mundane and let its free spirit take over, leaving you in a state of awe. The acceleration timing of 0 to 100 kmph in 4.2 seconds is a tad lower than a M6 and it is a great deal because the M6 is a sedan designed to cheat air resistance whereas this one is a muscular thorough bred SUV.

Get the motor cranked up and you can just hear an angry rumble of the motor. It is only when you let your foot loose, the motor starts creating symphony from an army of eight cylinders playing in unison to make sure you understand what you are dealing with here. The eight-speed transmission is fantastic at whipping all of that horsepower and channelizes them properly to all the four wheels. It is still not a dual clutch performance spitting gearbox but the Steptronic unit does succeed in mirroring it. There is also a way to alter the shift points in order to make the motor hold on to particular revs for a longer duration before shifting to the next.

Once the beast is rolling, you can’t help but concentrate all your senses on the steering wheel and the road ahead, provided you want to test the true potential of this monster. The steering input is direct and it can be further improved by altering the setting on the console. It drives like a proper performance car on auto settings but it is only when all the M-spec modes are switched on, tweaking the performance characteristics of the X6M, that you understand and feel what this car is capable of doing. To know more details on BMW X6 check Kmindia

BMW X6 Driving Dynamics

Dynamically, both these SUVs feel more cultured, rather than nerve-wracking. They ride on an electronically controlled front and air suspension at the rear. They also sit around 10mm lower than the standard models. The Drive Select system allows you to alter their character, with more direct throttle and heavier steering in Dynamic mode and more absorbent damping in Comfort setting. The cars ride on 20-inch standard Pirelli P Zero tyres and the amount of grip they offer is staggering. You can carry loads of speed through the fast corners and these SUVs only feel heavy and ungainly in the slower corners. Even the intelligent all-wheel-drive system give them loads of traction and helps put all the 567 horses down with minimal drama.

However, the steering, though nicely weighted, lacks the ultimate feedback and feels slightly artificial. The X6 M like its appearance feels sportier than the X5 with a sharper turn-in and in general, it feels more agile. Both these cars felt quite stiffly sprung, but we can only tell you more when we drive them on the road. The braking power comes from the huge M-spec brakes and they felt reassuring with good pedal feel.

BMW X6 Safety & Security

Among the safety features on offing six airbags, stability control, traction control, dynamic stability control including dynamic traction control, cornering brake control, side impact protection, engine vehicle immobilizer, crash sensor and hill descent control are included.

BMW X6 Verdict

Good things don’t come cheap, and in the case of these two SUVs this statement is more than true. The X6 M is priced at Rs 1.6 crore and the X5 M at Rs 1.55 crore. While the X5 M scores highly in terms of practicality with its big boot and comfortable cabin, the X6 M on the other hand scores a big zero. It is a bit cramped and even the boot is tiny as compared to the X5. But then it looks different and it surely packs more appeal than the X5.

But where both these SUVs excel is in the way they can outrun most sports cars and stand out of the crowd in most parking lots. But what’s really appealing is the fact that these cars can feel at home on a smooth race track as they can on our rough roads.
