Hyundai Xcent Overview

The Hyundai Xcent hasn’t been a blockbuster product for the Korean carmaker. Sure, it sells around 2,500 units or thereabouts on a monthly basis, which is exactly what most other compact sedans like the Ford Aspire, the Tata Zest and the Volkswagen Ameo sell. So, no fire there.But, when you consider that Hyundai has the second largest market share in the passenger car segment, and most of its other successful models (read the Grand i10 and the Creta) sell in excess of 10,000 units a month, one simply can’t term the Xcent a success. Right on cue then, three years after the Xcent was first launched, here’s the facelifted version of the car. Hyundai believes, with the styling changes and the addition of a few more features, the Xcent now has what it takes to get the cash registers ringing. Lets find out…

Hyundai Xcent Design

This time around, Hyundai has tried to apply maximum effort to implement the design scheme from the high-end models in its portfolio such as Elantra. This has resulted in new ‘cascading styled’ grille that looks similar to the elder sibling. This also makes the Xcent looks different from the Grand i10 for which it has been taunted for many years. But for many, the older set-up with slender grille joining the headlamps would have been more appropriate. Another noticeable change at the front is the revamped headlamps and the revised bumper which now houses daytime running LEDs, positioned above the fog lamps.

There aren’t many changes at the side profile except the wheels are larger than before and a new set of 15-inch diamond cut alloy wheels. However, it’s the rear that has gone through a huge makeover. The smaller tail-lights of the previous model have now been replaced by wrap-around units, adding nice width to the car. The taillights setup look like a typical Audi. Then there is matte-black strip running across the rear bumper that further adds to the muscularity. Other changes include shark fin antenna at the top and the 1.2D badging on the front right fender. Overall, the changes done by the carmaker at the outside will compel you to make a nod of appreciation.

Hyundai Xcent Cabin

Not much has changed on the inside of the 2017 Hyundai Xcent. The dash, the vents, the various buttons, and even the stowage spaces remain unchanged. It retains its large cooled glovebox too. The new Xcent uses the same large multifunctional steering as well with the only addition being a voice activation button. It is still only adjustable for rake, by the way. The seat fabric design is new, but otherwise in terms of cushioning, support and seating comfort, it is identical to the older car. So, it’s still reasonably comfortable to spend long hours in both front and back.

What’s significantly new though, is the infotainment system. Like on the Grand i10, the new system gets a wider touchscreen and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The latter mirrors a few functions of your phone on the screen simplifying access to related apps on the move. The new system besides offering Bluetooth connectivity and various audio input options, also doubles up as a reversing camera screen. Earlier, the Xcent used an inside rear-view mirror integrated screen which was too small to offer a clear view.

Otherwise the feature list for this top of the line variant remains the same with single zone climate control, rear AC vents, rear parking sensors, electric ORVMs with fold function, a basic trip computer, and keyless entry and start. For more information on Hyundai Xcent  visit Kmindia

Hyundai Xcent Engine

Our test car is powered by the new 1.2-litre diesel. It’s a three-cylinder engine that makes 75bhp. But, thanks to the additional torque compared to the older 1.1-litre engine, it hauls the Xcent around with more ease. It isn’t exactly quick. But, the improvement in drivability is significant. It makes driving the new car in the city and out on the highway a more relaxing affair.

The turbo lag is less pronounced, the throttle response is crisper and the car now requires less shifts to keep the desired pace. The new engine works best between 1,600 to 4,000rpm. Revving it higher is a bit pointless, as things only get louder with no meaningful increase in the rate of progress. The gearshifts meanwhile are short throw and precise and the clutch is light too, which works well in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Given that Hyundai hasn’t bothered with other mechanical changes on the new Xcent, the ride and handling remains almost the same as before. The ride is still plush at low speeds, and with decent visibility and maneuverability, the Xcent makes for an easy car to live within the city. But, the soft suspension setup doesn’t cope very well with the increase in speed.

Hyundai Xcent Riding

In terms of ride and handling, the new Xcent is pretty similar to the older car. So, the ride at low speeds is quiet and comfortable but it does get noisy and a bit harsh at higher speeds and over poor roads. The handling, thanks to the lack of connect from both the steering and the chassis in general, is not the most involving. The new Xcent will go around bends without feeling wayward or loose, yes, but it’s not something you look forward to like you would in the Amaze or even the Dzire. Request Hyundai Xcent Test Drive.

Hyundai Xcent Safety

Braking has never been a problem in Hyundai cars and Xcent is no exception. The responsibility of braking lies on the disc brakes at the front and drum at the rear. The braking system does its job quite judiciously with strong bite force. Looking at the growing safety concerns as well as the competition among the peers, the carmaker has decided to give dual airbags as standard fitment in the car.

However, it would have been better to have included ABS as a part of standard safety feature to keep pace with the competition. Nevertheless, the ABS, rear parking sensors, engine immobilizer, central locking, keyless entry and front fog lamps, all can be availed in higher models.

Hyundai Xcent Verdict

Hyundai is calling this one a stylish family sedan for the young and modern Indian family. Phew, that is a very long tag line. But, the good news for Hyundai is that the new Xcent comes close to justifying it. It’s more stylish that before, yes. And since it can seat four (yes, the seats are comfy too), it’s good for a nuclear family. As for the young and modern, well almost every car in this class now has a similar feature / tech list. So, there’s no real USP there. Our suggestion would be to buy it if you are looking for a no-nonsense car with good service backup.

Hyundai Xcent is offered in six different variants namely E, E+, S, S (AT), SX and SX (O). Talking about the pricing details, Hyundai Xcent’s base trim has been tagged at Rs. 5.54 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 6.42 lakh for the diesel trim. Its top ranging model gets the price tag of Rs. 7.65 lakh for petrol and goes up to Rs. 8.58 lakh for the diesel one. The top-selling variant 1.2 VTVT S trim is tagged at Rs. 6.5 lakh. The updated Xcent has really upped the game against Maruti Dzire, Honda Amaze, Volkswagen Vento and Tata Tigo in the space, where it has been finding hard to make its place for a couple of years.
