Nissan Terrano Overview

Nissan has launched the facelift Terrano in India today. The updated SUV gets minimal changes to the exterior while inside is where one will find the maximum number of changes. Nissan says that the SUV will compliment the lifestyle of today’s Indian customers. The updated Terrano although does not get any mechanical upgrades to its engine. Nissan Terrano Design

Dimensionally, Nissan Terrano measures 4.33m in length with a width of 1.83m. Its overall height with the fixed roof rail is 1.67m. The wheelbase of 2.67m adds more to the interior spacing which is already abundant given its incredible height. Nissan Terrano has a ground clearance of 205mm, which is similar to that of Renault Duster, but is an add-on advantage that will keep this SUV going easily on any terrain.

The side profile of Nissan Terrano has angular bold lines which are different from Duster’s curvy lines. The flared wheel-arches make the Terrano look aggressive, distinguishing it from most of Nissan’s models in India. The doors have two horizontal creases in them that enhance the butch look, but it isn’t enough to alleviate the organic lines of the rest of the car. The rear end bears no similarity to any of the Nissan SUVs and it is evident that Nissan has developed a new tail lamp cluster without fiddling too much with the Duster lamps. It gets a chrome garnish to add a premium feel, but the overall appearance is rugged with roof rails and silver skid plates.

The flared up wheel arches of this SUV are endowed with a set of diamond-cut 16” machined light -weight alloy wheels in the top end variants, while the base as well as the mid variants are fitted with similar sized robust steel wheels, which certainly make the SUV look sportier. These classy rims have been further equipped with tubeless radial tyres of size 215/65 R16, which have a superior road grip on any terrain.

Nissan has mildly upgraded the cabin of the Terrano in this AMT guise as a part of a mid-life update for the SUV. The dashboard is a dual-tone combination of black and beige with the former being the primary colour for most of the cabin. Where Nissan has managed to hit a few good runs is with the space and NVH insulation in the cabin. There is sufficient space in the cabin for five to sit comfortably thanks to the wide rear bench and absence of air-con blower vents. The NVH insulation on the other hand is quite good and at low speeds manages to filter out even the gravelly tone of the K9K diesel engine. However, at triple digit speeds wind and tyre noise does become quite audible.

Like we already mentioned above there are no mechanical changes under the hood of the updated Terrano. The SUV still is powered by the same 1.6-litre petrol engine that produces about 104 PS of peak power at 5, 850 rpm and 145 Nm of torque at 3750 rpm. The gasoline engine paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. The diesel variant, on the other hand, gets the 1.5 Litre DCI unit which is available in two states of tune. The base trim diesel option produces about 85 Ps of peak power at 3750 Rpm and 200 Nm of torque at 1900 rpm. The more powerful diesel option produces about 110 Ps of peak power at 4000 rpm and 245 Nm of torque at 1750 rpm. Transmission option for the diesel drivetrain includes a 6-speed manual while there is also an option of a six speed AMT as well available with the top end trim.

The mileage quotient ranks very highly of the preference list of the Indian population and the Nissan Terrano impresses on this front. The 1.5-liter Diesel engine with 108.5bhp of power output registers a mileage of 19kmpl, while the same engine with 83.8bhp of power output produces an impeccable mileage of 20.5kmpl. The 1.6-liter Petrol engine gives a mileage of 13.2 kmpl and these statistics make Terrano a fuel-efficient SUV.

In bumper-to-bumper traffic, the creep function helps majorly in keeping the car moving. The six-speed AMT box shifts as low as 2200rpm on part throttle while spirited driving sees it make the changes closer to 3000rpm. The wide torque spread means it only has to drop one gear for quick overtakes. Cruising on the highway too is relatively easy as it does 100kmph in sixth gear at just 2200rpm. You can also control the shifts manually using the gear lever and this is particularly useful if you need engine braking. There is also an eco-mode button which cuts down on the immediacy of power delivery and shifts at a lower rpm to keep the fuel efficiency.

In terms of ride quality, the suspension is on the stiffer side but it is a boon as the car is able to maintain its composure over bad roads without sending too much back to the cabin. There is some amount of body roll due to the high stance of the SUV but again thanks to the stiffer setup it is able to stay decently agile in the corners. However, one of the things that Nissan has not addressed is the heavy kickback that one experiences over mid-corner bumps or undulations.

Nissan Terrano boasts of a staunch and robust braking system. The front wheels of the compact SUV are incorporated with discs which make braking deft. While the front axle of the SUV has an independent McPherson strut type of mechanism with a coil spring and also a highly advanced anti-roll bar; the rear axle gets a torsion beam axle along with coil springs and a similar anti-roll bar for enhanced comfort for the rear passengers. Both these systems put together ensure that the passengers as well as the SUV are stable at all times.

The Indian auto market is in for a treat from Nissan in the form of a fuel-efficient SUV named Terrano that is superior to its French cousin Renault Duster. The Renault-Nissan consortium has an agreement that the donor car will be positioned below the new model and hence the prices of the Terrano are higher as compared to the Duster. The good news for Indians is that the difference between the Terrano and its French cousin is a meagre 40,000 even for the top variant in India for price sensitivity is high in India.
