Maruti Suzuki Ignis Performance & First Drive

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Overview

Call it a hatchback cum SUV or a blend of crossover and hatchback, Maruti Suzuki Ignis is a sub-4 meter vehicle serving as one of the most popular models in company’s portfolio. Maruti Suzuki India has tagged Ignis as the premium urban compact car. Before its launch everybody thought that Ignis is the premium car but soon all the opinions became thwarted as it came out to be one of the most affordable cars being sold via premium NEXA showroom. Maruti Ignis is built on the same platform that underpins the Boleno. A funky crossover, Maruti Ignis is an interesting vehicle mainly designed for the youth with attractive looks, premium interiors, advanced features, powerful and fuel efficient engine, all packed in reasonable price tag. Maruti Suzuki Ignis Design

The first thing one would notice is the unconventional design language! The LED projector headlamps with a U-shaped LED Daytime Running Lamps will ask for a second glance. Mated to the black and chrome grille, the Suzuki logo, as well as the large front bumper give the compact crossover a front fascia that hasn’t been usually seen on a Maruti Suzuki car, the Baleno and Ciaz being the exceptions here. Move to the side and there the 15-inch alloy wheel, available on the Zeta and Alpha trims with 175/65 section rubber add to the raised stance of the vehicle. The strong shoulder line with a large glass area clearly states that this is no conventional hatchback, but a compact crossover which cannot be missed. The only odd looking part (for some) in the Ignis is the three slats on the C-pillar.

The rear is where the company follows its simple design language, but with a dash of earthy design and the large tail lamps with the number plate housing, exude it. And it’s not that the Ignis can be purchased in just a fixed set of exterior colours. The car can be customised according to each buyer’s taste and Maruti Suzuki would do it, at an additional cost. So, no voiding warranty and you also give a unique character to your car.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Cabin

The Maruti Ignis interior is finished in dual-tone Black and Ivory shades. The illuminated instrument cluster with carbon fibre texture on louvers and speedometer is delightful. The infotainment system gets smartphone connectivity experience with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Mirror Link – a first-in-segment feature! It is the first car in Maruti Suzuki’s portfolio to offer Android Auto feature, which enables the occupants to connect their Smartphone with the infotainment, hence make calls, send and receive messages, and listen to music and audio books. In addition, Android Auto also helps in getting real-time traffic update via Google Navigation and access to other supported apps.

Maruti Ignis comes with decent cabin space for the occupants. The headroom and leg room for the front and rear occupants is praiseworthy. The boot capacity at 265 litre is also acceptable and it can be extended with 60:40 rear split. The cockpit-styled AC Panel, AC switches and EDM-inspired illumination in the speedometer are a few fresh things that Ignis offers.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Performance

The car is powered by tried and tested 1.2L K-series petrol unit which produces 83PS and 113Nm of max torque. The same engine is working quite well in other Maruti cars including Swift, Baleno and Dzire and the performance feels no different. The powertrain is refined and smooth and loves to be revved hard. At time it can be a blast to drive too, thanks to the low kerb weight at 865kgs.

Further, the 5-speed manual gearbox is slick to operate with the light clutch promoting the positive action. The engine is punchy enough in the low and mid-range which makes it potter in and around the city quite swiftly. Having said that, it is easy to leave the engine soaring between 1000-2000 rpm when commuting within city premises. Coming to the automatic transmission, the AMT does the job right job of swapping gears. In fact, the response time of the downshifts is much better in certain situations.

There is also a manual mode but that is ideal only in relaxed driving mood since the logic of the gearbox keeps you in search for power and left you waiting till the response comes. But what one would need to get accustomed at times is that the car pounces forward even if you have put your foot off the throttle while turbo spooling continues to feed the powertrain. At highway driving as well, the AMT seems to be more comfortable as the driver builds up speed in moderate manner. This means comfortable cruise with the occupants having smoother experience.

Now, in a fuel-efficiency sensitive segment, the Ignis being light (maximum kerb weight of kg) has a claimed mileage figure of 20.68 kmpl for the petrol and 26.9 kmpl for the diesel variants. In our short drive, the system indicated that for each litre of fuel, the petrol covered approximately 14 km and the diesel crossed 17 km easily. Compared to the real-world scenario and when compared in its segment, these numbers are reasonable and light on the owner’s pocket.Fuel economy figures of Ignis falls in the more than acceptable range. The car gives ARAI certified mileage of 20.89kmpl which is still good when we put it to compare with the rivals.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Rideing

If there is one compromise that a car with a tall stance has to do with better ground clearance, it is the ride and handling bit. The handling is neutral and during our short test, the suspension setup was neutral. Over normal curves, there is a little body roll, but nothing is unsettling and on straight highways, the stability is impressive. There is ample feedback from the electric power steering on the highway as well as the in the city. Since most of our driving included commuting through urban areas with a little high-speed use, it is safe to say that the ride and handling is one of the better-tuned ones in its segment.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Safety

The car features disc brakes at the front and drum at the rear. They are good but performance is not exceptional, however, in hard braking conditions, the vehicle doesn’t feel unnerved to stop in a straight line. The car can do better if fitted with wider set of tyres. ABS which is standard comes to rescue only in hard braking conditions, especially in emergency.Other standard fitment includes dual airbags, ISOFIX rear child seat mount, speed sensing auto door lock and driver seat belt reminder. Other key features include rear parking sensors with rear parking camera, rear defogger and rear wiper. View offers on Maruti Cars from Maruti dealers in Hyderabad at Autozhop

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Verdict

At the launch event, Maruti Suzuki’s head honcho announced that Ignis had received nearly 6000 bookings in the fortnight prior to the launch. This automatically shows the faith of Indian buyers in a Maruti product, and Maruti Ignis, with its salient features, sufficiently good ride quality and belligerent pricing, won’t disappoint the buyers. In all, it is an excellent product developed for city driving, pre-dominantly.
